Every year there is a new technological breakthrough: blockchain , 3D printing, web 3.0 and the metaverse . So what will be the technology of the year 2023?

Artificial intelligence (AI). Although I have been closely interested in this technology for 10 years, we are in the midst of a major leap forward in artificial intelligence. In recent months in particular, we’ve seen advancements in AI capabilities that have impressed even the skeptics. But first, let’s take a few steps back and look at how AI has evolved over the past decade.

2012-2014 – The beginnings of image recognition, reading and language understanding.

Some researchers say 2012 marked a milestone for deep learning. This is the year Google researchers created a large neural network of 16,000 processors with a billion connections to recognize images and videos of cats. This is an example of reinforcement learning which, along with supervised learning and probabilistic program induction, has been one of the most successful AI frameworks over the past decade. Recognizing the image of a cat may seem like a small feat. However, at that time, machines were just beginning to use deep learning for image recognition. In 2012, image recognition was still in its infancy, and tests comparing AI to human performance found AI performance to be around -40,that is, always below human performance (here, at baseline zero). Besides image recognition, a decade ago AI still performed worse than humans on other tasks such as reading comprehension and language comprehension. Although NELL (Never-Ending Language Learning), a semantic machine learning system, was invented in 2013, AI was still not able to reliably perform language processing tasks. AI’s ability to recognize speech improved dramatically with the invention of Alexa in 2014. Prior to that, Apple’s Siri allowed users to control their phones by voice. However, the ability of the AI at understanding language was always inferior to that of humans. Over the next few years, AI reached a higher level of performance than humans in understanding language. This is due to improvements in speech recognition, advances in language processing and associated linguistic models in neural networks, and the organization of information. Although AI systems still struggle to write long and coherent texts, chatbots like « ChatGPT » show the immense progress made to date. 2015 – 2017 AI started to be better than human

2015 was the year everyone was empowered to create meaningful AI models. After IBM’s proprietary artificial intelligence system « Watson » rose to fame in 2011 for defeating the champion Jeopardy! Ken Jennings, several open source machine learning platforms have emerged (eg Google’s open source deep learning framework, TensorFlow). This has allowed companies and developers to work with this technology in a new way. In addition, decisive progress has been made this year in the field of face and image recognition. Indeed, the company participated in the 6th edition of the ImageNet Large Scale Visual Recognition Challenge (ImageNet is a standardized collection of millions of photos that allows training and testing visual identification programs). In 2016, Deep Reinforcement Learning – a combination of neural networks and Reinforcement Learning – caused a stir in the IA when Google’s AlphaGo beat the best Go player in the world. Additionally, the introduction of the Transformer in 2017 enhanced the use of self-supervised learning models in combination with deep neural networks. Today, these Transformer models are the mainstream approach to natural language processing (NLP), including for applications such as machine translation and Google web search.

2018 – 2019 Data security, language processing and AI in medicine

Due to the Cambridge Analytica scandal, 2018 was the year when data security reached its peak. Along the same lines, a McKinsey survey found that in 2018, risk was one of the functions in which most respondents saw value in AI. Also, language processing took a big leap forward in the development of BERT in 2018. BERT is an example of a neural network language model that learns word usage, grammar, meaning, and basic facts in different contexts. By simultaneously linking sequences of words, rather than aligning them from left to right, models like BERT can generate abstractions that are nearly indistinguishable from human-generated text. These language processing models are essential to support applications such as chatbots and have enabled immense progress over the past decade.Additionally, in 2019, researchers began developing an AI system that outperforms human radiologists in detecting lung cancer. This result was achieved using a deep learning algorithm capable of interpreting computed tomography (CAT) scans to predict the likelihood of the disease.

2020 – 2021 Rapid progress in AI due to the pandemic

In 2020, the development of AI has been pushed and accelerated due to the COVID-19 pandemic. AI has played a major role in accelerating vaccine development, which would normally have taken decades. Instead, this process was dramatically shortened because AI helped researchers analyze massive amounts of data. The growth of AI is exemplified by global business investment of $68 billion, a 40% increase between 2019 and 2020. In addition, in 2021 alone, the number of AI-related patent applications AI innovation was 30 times higher than the number of applications filed in 2015, showing the meteoric progress of AI development. Last year, the scientific community is primarily focused on the application of AI to computers. In this subfield, machines are taught to understand images and other visual materials so as to perform well in image classification, object recognition, attribution of position and motion of joints in the human body and face recognition.

Today, AI is an integral part of our lives.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has experienced rapid development over the past ten years. Until ten years ago, almost no machine was able to reliably recognize speech or images. Today, machines have learned to outperform humans in many tasks. For example, AI systems can detect fraudulent charges before you know you’ve lost your card or verify credit terms. AI recognizes patterns and evaluates options in our daily lives. What Instagram post appeals to me and keeps me on the social media platform, what price on Amazon makes me buy, and whether I wanted to leave my AirPods at home. In recent months, it’s mostly « generative AI » that exploded – systems that create new possibilities. We’ve seen advancements in AI capabilities that have impressed even the skeptics.

A generative artificial intelligence firework

Within a few months, three different image-generating AIs were released: Dall-E, Midjourney, and Stable Diffusion. You enter some text and the system generates an image in seconds. Ask « an astronaut riding a horse on Mars » and the AI starts. An image of Midjourney made the cover of The Economist in June 2022, another won an award at the Colorado State Fair. It’s a sign of what’s to come in 2023.
